Jono Zissi: From Humble Beginnings to Lacrosse Legacy
Early Days of West Coast Lacrosse
Imagine starting something entirely new in a place where nobody even knows what you’re talking about. That’s exactly where Jono Zissi found himself when he began promoting lacrosse on the West Coast. Back in 2004, he would visit P.E. classes with lacrosse sticks and nets trying to spark interest in the sport. “It was a grind,” Zissi recalled. The initial reaction wasn’t always positive, with some folks laughing off his efforts. But Zissi didn’t give up; believing in his vision, he continued pushing forward.
Coaching at Torrey Pines High School
Fast forward to 2025, and it’s clear that Zissi’s perseverance has paid dividends. Now the head coach at Torrey Pines High School, he and his Falcons lacrosse team are aiming for their seventh consecutive CIF title. His dedication to building a strong program is evident, and the team’s success is a testament to his commitment. “The kids need to realize they are playing for something much bigger than themselves,” he emphasized, highlighting the values he instills in his players.
Life Lessons on and off the Lacrosse Field
Beyond the Game
Although Zissi no longer teaches in a classroom setting—having done so previously from 2006 to 2009 at The Bishop’s School—he continues to influence young athletes as a youth instructor for the West Coast Starz. His motto, “Be who you needed when you were that age,” underscores his approach to coaching and mentorship.
Zissi believes the true measure of his achievements isn’t just found in the victories. “Those three heartbreaking championship game losses over the years… really defined me and made me the coach I am today,” he shared. It’s this perspective that has shaped a resilient and successful program.
The Power of Mentorship and Community
Lasting Impact and Alumni Relations
Torrey Pines alumni like 22-year-old Harvard senior lacrosse player Miles Botkiss still feel a strong connection to their high school coach. Botkiss, who began his lacrosse journey with Zissi in fifth grade, attributes many of his life skills to lessons learned from his coach both on and off the field. “When I got to college it felt like a continuation of what I was already doing at Torrey Pines,” he said. Clearly, the bonds formed during these formative years have a lasting impact.
Current team captain and West Point commit, 18-year-old John Prior, echoes this sentiment. Having been quickly integrated into the varsity team as a freshman, he appreciates the culture and rigor that Zissi fosters. “The championships speak for themselves,” Prior remarked, acknowledging both the pressure and pride that come with being part of such a prestigious team.
Torrey Pines Lacrosse: A Look Ahead
Building a Legacy
The sense of community and continuity is palpable, with phrases like “Leave it better than you found it” adorning the team room walls. This philosophy resonates deeply with both current players and alumni, who stay connected to the program, cheering on from afar or returning to share their experiences.
“I’ve been to almost 30 weddings of kids I’ve coached,” Zissi pointed out, illustrating the deep personal connections he has formed through his role. It’s clear that at Torrey Pines, lacrosse is more than just a game—it’s about forming life-long relationships and preparing young individuals for the challenges ahead.
As for the future, Zissi remains focused on the present, guiding his team through another promising season and potentially another championship. But for him, the real victory lies in the lasting influence he has on his players’ lives—teaching them about dedication, resilience, and the importance of community.
